Many modern martial arts owe their history to the samurai who in turn based there open hand sticking techniques on the shaolin monks in China and the Kung Fu they practiced. Aikido is not a sport like Karate or Judo or Jujitsu. It is taught in a non-confrontational manner and there are no Karate or Tae Kwon Do like tournaments. This sometimes puts off judo, Jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do and Karate practitioners initially but after seeing the benefits of joint locks, submissions, throws and takedowns in Aikido and the way in which they are smoothly executed, many martial artists find it exciting and a refreshing way to look at martial arts again. Adding to the open handed techniques listed above we also practice with the sword (bokken) and Jo. |
